One Man’s Journey (session 12)

Life reality #1- Not all are happy with my success

Genesis 26:12-25

Last week we talked about the importance of blessing, its lack in our culture and its ability to establish a reference point in a young man’s life. I’m convinced this reference point is important because it communicates to the boy he is secure and he is loved.  But as early as the playground the boy starts to experience push-back, competition, and unfairness. This is painful but necessary if our boys are to grow towards becoming a noble authentic man.

In our culture we have created ways to retard this normal process and in so doing we’ve delayed the natural and right course for our boys to grow into men. I was giving a series of talks last fall at a father and son adventure. As I began one of the talks I asked the boys in the group, “From last time what did you learn about being a boy?” Twelve year old Frankie shot up his hand and with great enthusiasm responded, “It is not bad to be a boy but it is bad to be a boy in a man’s body!” We all split a gut, Frankie got it.
